Photos: George Floyd Family Remembrance Day
A photo essay of the 4th Anniversary of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis
Today’s post is a little different than previous ones. On a recent trip to Minnesota, I visited the site of the George Floyd incident on East 38th Street and Chicago Avenue South in my former hometown of Minneapolis for the first time. I used to live not far away, on 24th Street and a bit west.
The Floyd family marks the day prior to the actual incident, which occurred on May 25th, as a family remembrance day. I visited the site with the idea to share the images of what the area looks like today, four years later.
By chance, I had the opportunity to meet members of the Floyd family, George’s aunts Angela and Mahalia and cousin April, as well as Keith Ellison, current Minnesota Attorney General, former US Congressman, and lead prosecutor on the George Floyd criminal case. The group met up at the memorial to remember and discuss how things have changed since then. As you can imagine, it was an emotional occasion. Afterward, we walked across the street where the family, Ellison, and members of the Minneapolis Police Department met for an interview at KingDemetrius Pendleton’s Listen 2 Us Studio.
For those who don’t have the opportunity to visit, I want to show some photos of what is now officially known as George Perry Floyd Square. The fist statue, which has become an icon, sits permanently in the middle of the intersection. The memorial has been continually maintained and added to for four years.
[Note: I will share the link to the interview when I receive it.]
Thanks for sharing those photos with us. What a powerful trip it must have been.
